Platanus orientalis.
The Oriental Plane, Platanus orientalis, is a deciduous tree native to the Balkan peninsula and the Middle East (from Turkey to India it is called chinar). This wonderful giant tree with the massive trunk, is the prevailing species in every ravine, and along almost every river and stream in Greece. It is also a master of survival in dry soils and can endure the summer heat once it is established. What is very special about this tree, apart from it's refreshing shade, is the way it is branched, and, in the occasion of large trees, the way the tips of the branches are hanging.
Platanus occidentalis, commonly known as the American Planetree or Sycamore, is native to N. America (no images of the species are provided here). It is a large upright tree with much larger leaves and fruit, that is usually not fit for the dry and hot climate of Greece.

Ο Ανατολικός Πλάτανος, Platanus orientalis, είναι ένα πανέμορφο φυλλοβόλο δέντρο που απαντάται αυτοφυές στην Βαλκανική Χερσόνησο και την Μέση Ανατολή. Αυτό το πανύψηλο δέντρο με τον ογκώδη κορμό, κυριαρχεί σε κάθε φαράγγι, ποτάμι και ρυάκι της Ελλάδας. Είναι επίσης είδος ιδιαίτερα ανθεκτικό στην ξηρασία και την ζέστη, εφόσον έχει πρώτα εγκατασταθεί σε μια περιοχή. Εκείνο που κάνει το είδος αυτό πολύ ιδιαίτερο, εκτός από την ασύγκριτα δροσερή σκιά του, είναι η πλαστικότητα του σκελετού και ο τρόπος που μοιάζει να κρέμονται οι άκρες των κλαδιών του.
Ο Αμερικανικός Πλάτανος, Platanus occidentalis, είναι είδος ενδημικό της Β. Αμερικής (φωτογραφίες του δεν περιλαμβάνονται σ΄ αυτήν την παρουσίαση). Πρόκειται για ένα ψηλό δέντρο με περισσότερο κανονικό και όρθιο σκελετό, καθώς και πολύ μεγαλύτερα φύλλα και καρπούς, το οποίο συνήθως δεν είναι κατάλληλο για τις συνθήκες ξηρασίας και ζέστης της Ελλάδας.
