Verbascum sinuatum

The exquisite wavy-leaf rosette of Verbascum sinuatum.

Verbascum sinuatum is another wavy leaf mullein that is very widespread in the whole of the Mediterranean basin. Together with V. undulatum they are the most commonly occurring species in Greece. The thick felty grey-green basal leaves are wavy in a more complicated, and occasionally interesting and fine, way, that makes you think that their leaf rosettes must have been a source of inspiration for architectural marble sculpting in ancient Greece, besides species of the genus Acanthus. The plant usually produces one or more large multi-branched flower stems, oftentimes reddish-brown, with beautiful yellow flowers that have stamens with violet filaments and orange anthers.

At least four other species bear similar flowers: V. chaixii (prefers moist soil), V. aphentulium (a rare endemic to Pelion and the Sporades islands), V. blattaria (uncommon in Greece), and V. nigrum (a European species, rare in Greece, prefers moist soil).
