I almost gave up on this stunning blue flower species, and was about to post it in the Please-Tell-Me-Your-Name section. This herbaceous plant is a perennial species that belongs to the genus Lithospermum of the family Boraginaceae. Lithospermum means "stone seed", due to the hardness of the glossy white seed capsules of these plants. In Greece three species can be found, and this, I believe, is the most amazing one.
Lithospermum purpurocaeruleum (formerly known as Buglossoides purpureocaerulea), is a rhizomatous plant that forms a matrix of woody stems that spread on the ground and under the rotting layer of the leaves of deciduous trees. The flowers, that form clusters, start off as purple and turn into bright blue as they mature, hence the name "purpurocaeruleum" (purple and blue).
The plant occurs in small colonies in wood edges, from sea level up to 1,800 meters. It prefers shaded areas and moist soil. Other than Europe and W. Asia, it is native to Japan, where it has been traditionally grown for its roots, that are used as medicine and as the source of a famous purple dye.

Παραλίγο να παραιτηθώ από την αναζήτηση του ονόματος αυτού του φυτού με τα εκπληκτικά μπλε λουλούδια, και να το αναρτήσω στη λίστα Please-Tell-Me-Your-Name. Αυτό το είδος είναι ένα πολυετές φυτό που δε σχηματίζει υπέργειους ξυλώδεις βλαστούς, και ανήκει στο γένος Lithospermum της οικογένειας Boraginaceae. Το όνομα Lithospermum σημαίνει "πέτρινος σπόρος" εξαιτίας της σκληρότητας της γυαλιστερής λευκής κάψουλας των σπόρων. Στην Ελλάδα απαντώνται τρία είδη, από τα οποία αυτό είναι κατά τη γνώμη μου το πιο εξαιρετικό.
Το είδος Lithospermum purpurocaeruleum (η προηγούμενη ονομασία ήταν Buglossoides purpureocaerulea), είναι ένα φυτό που σχηματίζει ένα πλέγμα ξυλωδών βλαστών κάτω από τη στρώση των σάπιων φύλλων από πλατύφυλλα δέντρα, καθώς επεκτείνεται με οριζόντιους βλαστούς οι οποίοι ριζοβολούν εκ νέου. Τα λουλούδια είναι στην αρχή πορφυρού-μωβ χρώματος, και στη συνέχεια γίνονται έντονα μπλε. Αυτή άλλωστε είναι και η σημασία του ονόματος "purpurocaeruleum" (πορφυρό-μωβ και μπλε).
Το φυτό απαντάται σε μικρές αποικίες σε ξέφωτα δασών, από το επίπεδο της θάλασσας έως τα 1.800 μέτρα ύψος. Προτιμά τη σκιά και τα υγρά εδάφη. Εκτός από την Ευρώπη και τη Δ. Ασία, είναι ενδημικό φυτό της Ιαπωνίας, όπου και καλλιεργείται παραδοσιακά για τις φαρμακευτικές ρίζες του, οι οποίες είναι και η πηγή μιας φημισμένης μωβ χρωστικής ουσίας.
