Geranium purpureum

Splendid Geranium purpureum overlooking the sea.

Geranium purpureum, commonly known as Little Robin (also Lesser or Purple Herb Robert), is a geranium very easily overlooked as Geranium robertianum. I find that this classification only underlines the exceptional beauty of G. robertianum, of which it is almost a faithful replica. It also amplifies the relish of sharing the beautiful features of this unique species.
Once again, besides G. purpureum's relation to the sea, and to low elevation, the most apparent difference is found when comparing the flowers:
-- G. robertianum has more pale-pink, striped looking flowers, with larger and broader petals, whereas
-- G. purpureum has simple and smaller, striking pink flowers with orange-yellow anthers and pollen, that are very similar to those of G. lucidum.

  2. Hi Brett. Both species have a very healthy geranium, "mother earth" aroma at least when you rub them - and it's not a stench!! This smell will tell you more about its energy/value (medicinal uses) than any herbal medicine book! So, be open and get in touch with the plant, and if you really need to know that the specimen you 're looking at is Geranium purpureum (forget the common names and nick-names) then you really need to know how Geranium robertianum looks like (extremely similar) and COMPARE THE FLOWERS, just as I'm showing you in this entry. Take a better look at the images comparing the two species.
