Salsola soda

A dry Salsola soda plant on the seashore.

Salsola soda is a very tasty summer salad, usually preferred cooked. This annual, salt-tolerant (halophyte), succulent shrub grows close to the sea and in salt marshes, and is native to the Mediterranean Basin. Until the beginning of the 20th century, Salsola soda was needed for the production of impure sodium carbonate that was used in the industry of soap and glass - the same counts for the next three plant species in our sequence.

Salsola soda's fresh shoots make an excellent summer salad.

Salsola soda can easily be found on remote or deserted beaches outside the city.
